WHAT WE DO AT THE NIGERWIVES COMPUTER-TRAINING CENTRE FOR THE BLIND.

The Nigerwives Computer-Training Centre for the Blind is situated in the compound of King’s College Annexe, Adeyemo Alakija Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. Our vision is to prepare qualified blind persons for the modern computer-based work environment. Although the focus is on blind persons with a tertiary qualification, others without tertiary qualifications will be considered. It is intended to organise computer literacy courses for visually impaired secondary school students during holiday periods.

Working with regular, IBM-compatible, multimedia computers and scanners, trainees undergo a three-month basic computer-operating course on which they learn to identify and use various components of the computer, including:

- Manipulating the computer using the Microsoft Windows operating system.
- Using screen readers (programs that speak out what is on the monitor screen) to prepare, read   and format documents, tables and other forms of data on the computer.
- Saving and retrieving data to and from the hard drive, the office network, diskettes and other   storage devices.
- Reading printed materials independently by scanning them onto the computer memory.
- Learning how to use help facilities and on-line manuals to develop their skills in needed   applications.
- Utilising the Internet and other communication facilities of the computer.
- Basic trouble-shooting of their computer system.

The Computer-training Centre is open Mondays to Fridays 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Trainees will attend at least two three-hour sessions per week. The basic course will consist of 25 three-hour sessions and programmes will be arranged to accommodate different time schedules as far as possible.

The Centre makes a special appeal to companies and organisations that recruit young graduates into their work-force. Formerly such companies have not been willing to consider visually impaired applicants because they cannot see how they can be employed effectively. We would be willing to produce brailled copies of any papers required for the interview process to enable visually impaired applicants to take the same tests. We look forward to welcoming you to the Centre. With computer training it is possible for visually impaired persons to work effectively in sighted work environments and we hope employers will come to the Centre and see for themselves what is possible.
