WELCOME TO LAGOS BRANCH

Nigerwives originated in Lagos in 1979. With over 100 members throughout this sprawling metropolis, Lagos Branch is divided into Local Areas:
1. Ikeja/Ogudu,
2. Ikorodu,
3. Ikoyi,
4. Shomolu/Gbagada/Ifako,
5. Surulere/Aguda/Yaba/Mushin/Ebute Metta, 6.Victoria Is./Lekki/Victoria Garden City/Ajah/Epe.

Local Area Representatives organize monthly Area Meetings in our homes. All members assemble for the General Meetings at the Corona School, Mekunwen Road, Ikoyi, on the first Saturday of each month. A Nigerwives Directory and a monthly Newsletter is distributed to members.

In addition to assisting the integration of foreign wives into Nigerian society, our association also provides a unified voice to query government regulations affecting our immigration and employment status:

The Executive successfully challenged the Central Bank Exchange Control regulations, reinstating for foreign wives of Nigerians a home remittance rate of 50% of earnings instead of the reduced rate of 25%.

In 1982 we obtained a letter from the Immigration Department stating that:

  • Non-Commonwealth citizens who were Nigerwives were not required to register as aliens.
  • Nigerwives did not require a work permit to be included in a company’s expatriate quota.
  • Nigerwives were entitled to an indefinite residence permit and re-entry visa.
  • Nigerwives who were widows, divorced or separated from their husbands would have their cases for continued residence in the country decided on an individual basis.
  •

Lagos Branch successfully spearheaded the resistance to the CERPAC Scheme.

Nigerwives, husbands, children, grandchildren, and members of the press flocked to the Immigration Services in September 2002 in response to the new directive.

We were welcomed by sympathetic Immigration Department officials.

No history of Lagos Branch can be complete without mentioning the support given to the blind students which culminated in the Nigerwives Braille Book Production Centre. The Braille Centre, located in Lagos, is our major charity. Our annual participation in 'Small World' (called the Biggest Fund-Raiser in Lagos) guarantees a generous contribution to this project.

Lagos Branch also supports several other charities within the Lagos community.
