The Nigerwives Braille Book Production Centre was set up in 1995 with two main aims:
(a) To produce brailled books for visually impaired students,
(b) To provide computer training to prepare visually impaired applicants for the world of work.

Below you will find a brief summary of our current projects. We hope you will take time to read through and find some way of helping us.

Book Production (Click here for more info)

The production of books at the secondary level is very well established and continues, with new books being added to the list regularly. Despite the high cost of production, all our books are sold at the same price as sighted students buy the print books. This is our policy of equal opportunity for the visually impaired.

We are now starting to produce books at the Primary level, assisted by a grant from the Canadian Braille Literacy Foundation. Most of the special primary schools for the blind outside Lagos have neither text books nor general reading books in Braille. Our Book Project below is addressing the need for general reading books at this level.

Computer Training (Click here for more info)

The Computer Training programme started in January 2004. It is aimed primarily at visually impaired graduates. Using screen reading software which replaces seeing with hearing, visually impaired persons can access print documents and respond to them, as do sighted users of the computer. This enables them to work effectively in regular work situations. As of now, most employers recruiting young graduates will not consider visually impaired applicants because they consider that they cannot work effectively in administrative positions. We need help in changing this attitude and would welcome any assistance in this direction. The centre would be happy to produce any tests required for the screening process in a format that visually impaired applicants can access.

Book Project (Click here for more info)

Our Book project is directed at improving Braille literacy among visually impaired children - particularly at the primary level - by providing general reading books in their schools. We are able to do this through the generosity of the Braille Institute Press in California. They send us brailled story books and the Centre distributes them, through branches of Nigerwives and with the support of several companies who help us transport them, to special primary schools for the blind in all parts of the country. We plan to hold a Braille reading competition for participants during 2004 to further encourage a high level of Braille literacy amongst younger people who are visually impaired.

The Centre, situated in Kings College Annexe, Victoria Island, Lagos is open Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm.. Visitors are welcome. Our Newsletter [NewsM03] contains more information on the activities of the Centre.
