Nigerwives Abia State Branch was formed by nine members in 1995 as a forum to exchange views and experiences, and to give moral and practical support in times of need. Eager to welcome our sisters from distant places, in March 1999 we hosted the National AGM despite our relatively small size.

Since its inception has basically focused on:
- Activities which promote harmony and friendship among members and their families. We organized Christmas and Easter Parties for the children, and 'Husband Night', where our husbands and children can interact and get to know one another.
- Activities that give moral practical support to members as discussed during our monthly meetings: supporting and attending occasions such as chieftaincy, weddings of members' children, burial of husbands or in-laws.
- 'Bring and Buy Events' where members sell homemade produce and various items, etc.
- Community Projects --for the past four years we successfully organized a Family Bazaar , using the proceeds to sponsor the blind students in Abia State. We constructed a Resource Room for blind students, donated Braille books to Ngwa High School, Umuahia, to Afara School of The Blind in Umuahia, and also gave them lunch and gifts in December 2002. In addition, we have donated a complete set of Braille books to Ovom Girls Secondary school this year.
